I still can't believe that I went. When I found out that I had been chosen to participate in an artist's residency in rural France, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had been following Chateau Orquevaux on Instagram for a while . The photos of the chateau itself and the grounds were amazing...like something you'd see on PBS Masterpiece Theater. Was this place really that special to planes, trains and automobile it to rural France? Oh, my! Was it!!
First of all, the chateau itself is breathtaking. It sits on a hill overlooking the village of Orquevaux. The chateau offers not only a lovely home away from home, but there are orchards, a pond, a swimming pond (yes, I swam...brrr), and a studio for every artist. Every need is tended to.
For 2 weeks, I would wake every morning to the most spectacular sunrise, and then be joined for breakfast by the most spectacular artists. After breakfast, it was a short walk to my studio, where I would create all day. Short breaks were common so there was plenty of time to get acquainted with my fellow artists, or just share a bottle of wine and chat. It was a wonderful time of sharing ideas, materials and sharing of ourselves. I cannot remember a time, as of late, when I felt so carefree. I think that is the magic, and I am so grateful that I went!
Merci, Chateau Orquevaux!!
xoxo
